MAISON MARTIN MARGIELA - 1988 - Lot 11
MAISON MARTIN MARGIELA - 1988 Prototype mask made of white cotton voile, 1988 No label, pencil corrections, white cotton ties on a white-painted marionette head Stamped Height: approx. 63 cm - 25 in. “THE VEIL” 1988 - 2008 “From the very beginning, I had the idea of creating a veil that would completely cover the models’ faces. As a result, all attention was focused on the clothes, without being distracted by a face. This created a form of abstraction. I loved this discovery and often used it when the focus was primarily on the clothes. This is a study, with its pencil correction marks.» Martin Margiela Provenance: Martin Margiela’s personal archives. A prototype for a white “voile” mask, 1988 Unlabeled, pencil correction marks on the sides, white cotton ribbons attached, on a white-painted mannequin head Stamped Height approx.: 63 cm - 25 in "THE VEIL" 1988 - 2008 "From the start I had the idea to create a veil to cover the models’ entire faces. By doing so, suddenly all attention was purely focused on the clothes without any distraction from the person’s face. It created almost an abstraction. I loved that discovery and often reused them when the focus on the clothes was important. This piece is a study with pencil marks indicating corrections."
