Ione Saldanha (1919-2001) developed a singular body of work within Brazilian abstraction, marked by rigorous yet poetic research into color, verticality and the expansion of painting in space. Starting with figurative compositions structured by geometry, she evolved towards an increasingly radical language, exploring unusual supports and blurring the boundaries between painting and sculpture with sober, luminous and architectural forms. Independent of the dominant movements, she builds a coherent trajectory where the materiality of the support dialogues with chromatic compositions of great intensity. The Roberto Pontual collection includes two significant examples of her research: an emblematic ripa and a rare chess set designed by the artist. His works are held in major public collections, including the Museu de Arte Moderna in Rio de Janeiro and the MASP - Museu de Arte in São Paulo. His work is enjoying renewed international recognition, as evidenced by his presence at the Venice Biennale 2024.
