Roberto MAGALHÃES (b. 1940) - Lot 94
Roberto MAGALHÃES (b. 1940) Untitled, 1965 Watercolor on paper Signed and dated lower left 32 x 28.5 cm Provenance: Former collection of art critic and historian Roberto Pontual (1939-1994) Roberto Magalhães (Rio de Janeiro, 1940) is a painter, draughtsman and engraver whose singular career occupies an autonomous place in contemporary Brazilian art. Right from the start of his career, he developed an imagination marked by the poetic distortion of reality, where human figures, cities, animals and fantastical architectures intertwine in compositions imbued with humor, irony and dreamlike, symbolic elements. Navigating freely between various techniques - from drawing to xylography, watercolor to painting - he has built up an intense, independent body of work, often associated with the new figurations of the 1960s, yet eluding classifications and movements. He took part in two landmark exhibitions that marked the history of Brazilian art: Opinião 65 and Nova Objetividade Brasileira. The Roberto Pontual collection brings together four watercolors that are particularly representative of his graphic universe and poetic research. Somewhere between the grotesque and the lyrical, his work takes a critical look at the human condition and the contradictions of the contemporary world, establishing him as one of the most original voices on the Brazilian art scene.
