We would like to thank Projeto Concreto PRL / Acervo Iconográfico Documental/MAM.RJ for the information provided. Paulo Roberto Leal (1946 - 1991) is a Brazilian artist whose practice lies at the crossroads of painting, object and installation, marked by constant research into the materiality of supports and the expansion of pictorial language. Active from the late 1960s, alongside a career as an economist, he developed a rigorous, experimental body of work based on repetitive, modular processes and a particular attention to emptiness, interstices and structure. Nourished by the heritage of neo-concretism and in dialogue with international minimalist and conceptual approaches, his work explores, with economy of means, the tensions between fragility and construction, silence and presence. A committed figure on the Brazilian art scene, he also participated in the renewal of critical and curatorial debate in the 1980s, leaving a singular contribution to the history of contemporary art in Brazil. Exhibitions that stand out include his participation in the Venice Biennale in 1972 and 1980, and the São Paulo Biennale. Roberto Pontual has been a fervent supporter of the artist's work throughout his career. Twelve works by Paulo Roberto Leal - including canvases and boxes/objects - are held in the Roberto Pontual collection. The paintings, presented in the exhibition "Modernidade: Brazilian art of the 20th century" at the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris in 1987, have not been shown since, and all the works are now preserved in perfect condition. His work is also held in major public and private collections, including the MASP - Museu de Arte de São Paulo and the MAM in Rio de Janeiro, as well as several international collections.
