MAISON MARTIN MARGIELA - Lot 67
MAISON MARTIN MARGIELA A rare set including a curtain skirt, Fall-Winter 1990-91 A rare curtain skirt ensemble, Autumn-Winter 1990-91 Blank labels, comprising: a bronze viscose 'lining' skirt, the waist with metal rings threaded with black cotton ribbon; a pale beige wool jersey top with ribbed midriff, darts to bust and sleeves, half button closure, bust 81-96cm 32-38in; a pair of matching leggings with ribbed hems, button holes for braces at waist, waist 71cm 28in (3) These models were worn together on the runway These early collections represented a visual manifesto for what Margiela's oeuvre would become. He focussed on exposing the methods of production so that the history of a garments own craftsmanship could be seen on the wearer and he achieved this by regularly employing techniques whereby seam returns and darts were shown on the exterior of the garments. In this case the skirt evokes the fitting room curtains behind which his models would bring his experimental clothes to life
