MAISON MARTIN MARGIELA ARTISANAL Un gilet en papier mâché, printemps-été 1990 A papier-mâché gilet, Spring-Summer 1990 blank label, formed of layers of advertising posters, with split to back, lined in white cotton, bust approx 91cm 36in This gilet forms one of the most iconic looks from Martin Margiel'as most revolutionary runway show - Spring-Summer 1990. It encapsulates the designer's love of quotidian objects, and likewise exemplifies his interest in re-use and transformation. Martin has a well documented interest in contemporary art, and he applied a philosophical, conceptual approach to his designs. This gilet signifies an interest in degradation, and austerity while managing to likewise feel fresh and expressive of a creator untethered by social norms. One needn't look far into the realms of Arte Povera to find artists who similarly used found objects to effect radical change within their own artistic spheres. Indeed Mimo Rotella even used a parallel process of décollage to create vast canvases formed from torn up advertising posters. Margiela has extended this idea here, literally enveloping the human form in the detritus of conspicuous consumerism, seemingly mocking the overt branding used in luxury fashion from the humble perspective of his own anonymous blank label. It is little wonder then, that when people talk of Margiela's work, they associate it less with the prevailing trends of the time, and instead attribute it as wearable art.
