Maurice ANDRE (1914-1985) Signal Based on a card by Maurice André (1914- 1985) Circa 1960-1970 Woven in cotton and wool (cotton warp, wool weft) France, Aubusson, Atelier Picaud Studio mark lower left Artist's woven signature lower right. One bolduc Dim.: 1.46 x 1.10 m Maurice André began creating tapestry cartoons in 1943, including OEuvres Monumentales for the Council of Europe (1955) and, in 1964, for the Casino de Cannes. In 1949, he became a member of the Association des Peintres-Cartonniers de Tapisseries. In 1958, he was awarded the Grand Prix International de Création for the French Pavilion at the Brussels exhibition. He carries out numerous private and institutional commissions. The exhibition catalog, Aspects de la tapisserie contemporaine, tells us that "From 1940 to 1945, on his return from the war, he [Maurice André] stayed in Aubusson. There he met Gromaire and Jean Lurçat and quickly became interested in tapestry. His first cardboard ʺ Aubussonʺ dates from 1943".
