MARTIN MARGIELA - SS 1990 (TERRAIN VAGUE) - Lot 32
MARTIN MARGIELA - SS 1990 (TERRAIN VAGUE) Miniature of a papier-mâché vest and an oversized tank top, from the “Terrain Vague” collection, Spring-Summer 1990 Vest made of torn posters and a white cotton tank top worn as a skirt, displayed on a white-painted fashion mannequin Created by Martin Margiela, Circa 2020 Stamped Height: approx. 67 cm - 26.5 in. MINIATURES 2018–2024 “I’ve always been fascinated by questions of scale. Things that are too big or too small excite me. I’ve always cherished the half-size mannequin we received at the Antwerp Academy. I’ve often used it throughout my career to quickly test new ideas. After the exhibition at the Palais Galliera in 2018, I realized I was missing several creations from my fashion period. I didn’t have the courage to recreate them in full size, but thinking of my little mannequin, I began reworking certain ideas in miniature. It quickly became a real pleasure to create these small pieces. They are even more touching than the full-size versions.” Martin Margiela Provenance: Martin Margiela’s personal archives. A miniature of a paper waistcoat and oversized tank top, inspired by the ‘Terrain Vague’ collection, Spring-Summer 1990 Waistcoat made of torn posters, oversized white cotton tank top worn as a skirt, on a white-painted tailor’s dummy Made by Martin Margiela, Circa 2020 Stamped Height approx.: 67 cm - 26.5 in. MINIATURES 2018-2024 "I was always intrigued by scale. Too big and too small excite me. I always cherished the 50% scaled mannequin we had at the Academy of Antwerp. I often used it throughout my career to quickly test out new ideas. After the Galliera exhibition in 2018, I realized I was missing several designs from my fashion period. I didn’t have the courage to remake them, but thinking of my tiny mannequin, I started to rework some ideas. It quickly became a real pleasure to make these small creations. They are even more touching than the actual-size versions were." Martin Margiela Provenance: Martin Margiela’s personal archives.
