JEAN PAUL GAULTIER HAUTE COUTURE - Lot 73
JEAN PAUL GAULTIER HAUTE COUTURE Ensemble comprenant une veste et un pantalon, collection « Smoking No Smoking », Automne/Hiver 2018-19 A sequined jacket ensemble, 'Smoking No Smoking' collection, Autumn-Winter 2018-19 Lace label, look 45, the chevron-ribbed white satin jacket applied with brown and black sequined bands, the top band embroidered with animal repeats in Peruvian-knit style, the undersleeves formed from bands of black and brown devoré, deep waistband, the front zip outlined with topaz coloured crystals, chest approx 91cm 36in; the matching flared synthetic jersey track pants with white bands delineating the inside leg, waist 71cm 28in (2) The 'le Smoking' or tuxedo is one of Gaultier's favourite signatures which he used in the title of his show. With his customary wit, at the same time he was poking fun at a partial smoking ban which had been introduced in Paris. This ensemble at first glance may seem quite relaxed and almost informal, but it was one of the most expensive purchases at the time - due to the lavish embroidery on the jacket which has to be seen up close to be fully appreciated and is the last word in relaxed luxury.
