Classic wooden tapa beater, Polynesia, probably Tonga archip - Lot 8
Classic wooden tapa beater, Polynesia, probably Tonga archipelago Height: 25 cm, Width: 5.5 cm. Provenance: Collection André Breton, Paris - Calmels Cohen, Paris, April 17, 2003, Collection André Breton, no. 6134. Parallelepipedic in cross-section, with four active faces finely grooved with parallel grooves of varying density. These grooves were used to thin and widen the bark of the paper mulberry (Broussonetia papyrifera) to produce tapa, a vegetable textile used for ceremonies and prestige exchanges. A utilitarian object of rigorous geometry, the tapa beater with its formal minimalism and the graphic force of its incised rhythms. Appraised by Mr. Pierre Mollfulleda, Specialist in Oceanic and African Arts. A traditional wooden tapa beater, Polynesia.
