MAISON MARTIN MARGIELA ARTISANAL - Lot 318
MAISON MARTIN MARGIELA ARTISANAL Un gilet formé à partir d'une robe de bal des années 1950, printemps-été 1991 A waistcoat formed from a 1950s ballgown, Spring-Summer 1991 blank label, formed from a vintage 1950s ballgown that was cut down the front and across the skirt, overdyed black which has left a grey colouration, with broderie anglaise outer layer, layers of lining and mesh to hem, black cotton ties to front, bust approx 76cm 30in These vintage dresses were originally designed to be worn with corsets in the 1950s and were too small to comfortably fit the models in the 1990s. Margiela had set up his first atelier at 13 Boulevard Saint-Denis which allowed the artisans space to make significant alterations to these pieces for the collection. They were dyed black in a washing machine, deconstructed and repurposed, imbuing them with a bold aesthetic that belied the feminine elegance that the dresses had originally intended.
