L'art de Jonathan Monk connaît deux sources principales : son histoire familiale et une histoire de l'art qui le passionne, celle de l'art minimal et conceptuel dont il réactive certaines formes. Mais, au-delà de la simple citation, c'est surtout l'esprit conceptuel qu'il convoque dans ses œuvres. Dans un geste qui emprunte davantage à la parodie qu'à la simple copie, Jonathan Monk questionne nos rapports à l'originalité de l'œuvre et à l'aura de l'artiste issue de la modernité. Aussi sa pratique protéiforme n'accepte-t-elle pas de style spécifiquement personnel. Dans "Lines" il parodie une oeuvre de John Baldessari : I Will Not Make Any More Boring Art de 1971 « L'appropriation est quelque chose que j'ai utilisé où avec lequel j'ai travaillé dans mon art depuis que j'ai commencé l'école d'art en 1987. Je pense toujours que l'art est une question d'idées, et sûrement l'idée d'un original et une copie d'un original sont deux choses très différentes ». UK Jonathan Monk was born in 1969, a pivotal year in the formulation of conceptual art principles. Jonathan Monk's art has two main sources: his family history and an art history that fascinates him, namely minimal and conceptual art, of which he reactivates certain forms. However, beyond mere citation, it is primarily the conceptual spirit that he evokes in his works. With a gesture that leans more towards parody than mere imitation, Jonathan Monk questions our relationship with the originality of the artwork and the aura of the artist stemming from modernity. His protean practice thus does not adhere to any specific personal style. In "Lines," he parodies a work by John Baldessari: I Will Not Make Any More Boring Art from 1971. "Appropriation is something I have used and worked with in my art since I started art school in 1987. I still think that art is about ideas, and surely the idea of an original and a copy of an original are two very different things."
