CHANEL
Ceinture en peau retournée noir et métal doré, Printemps-Eté 1990 A black suede and gilt belt, Spring-Summer 1990, stamped, the large twisted rope-effect gilt buckle adorned with outsized cabochons and a faux-pearl, length 76-79cm, 30-31in The large gilt rope effect jewellery from this collection was intended to evoke Lagerfeld's hometown of Hamburg at the start of the 20th Century. Victoire de Castellane's talent as a jewellery designer was spotted and encouraged early on by Lagerfeld. She joined the House in 1984 and rapidly rose through the ranks, staying until 1998. Working in collaboration with Lagerfeld she designed some of the most witty, amusing belts and jewellery for both ready to wear and couture collections. She sometimes liked to play with proportions, pushing the idea of fake jewellery to the limits to emphasise the very fact that it wasn't real. For Spring/ Summer 1990 ready to wear she designed giant moulded plaster brooches, earrings and chains, which were both bold and witty. Of her time with working with Lagerfeld she stated, ''I enjoyed working with Karl at Chanel; everything was possible. He had just started the artistic direction of Chanel. I learned how to play with the identities of the House. We had a lot of fun and it was a great success. I also learned how to create without getting bored without taking things too seriously…'' Provenance: The Mouna Ayoub Collection
