LOUIS VUITTON x CINDY SHERMAN - Lot 116
LOUIS VUITTON x CINDY SHERMAN Malle studio Trunk In 2014, to celebrate the 160th anniversary of the monogram canvas, Louis Vuitton commissioned 10 iconic artists of their time to create a Louis Vuitton object. Artist Cindy Sherman designed the exceptional studio trunk for this occasion. The exterior features coated monogram canvas adorned with facsimiles of Cindy Sherman's photomontages depicting the artist. The locks, reinforcements, and studs are made of polished brass, and the handles are of 'Elephant Ears' type in natural cowhide. The trunk opens in two parts: The first part, covered in violet goat leather, reveals: 1 beauty trunk in monogram canvas, with violet goat leather interior, equipped with an illuminating mirror, a nomadic mirror, and compartments. 1 sliding drawer containing a Louis Vuitton/Cindy Sherman messenger bag. 7 rotating drawers in gradient suede from yellow to duck blue. 1 folding seat covered in natural cowhide. The second part, covered in monogram canvas, reveals: 27 drawers in gradient suede from almond green to duck blue. Each drawer is fully extractable on natural leather slides. Individual and customizable label on each drawer face. Only 25 pieces of this model were produced between 2014 and 2017, each numbered on a leather cartouche inside the lid. Our model bears the number 25/25. Closed dimensions: 102 x 61 x 53 cm. Cindy Sherman is a contemporary American artist whose work has revolutionized visual art. She has dedicated her career to exploring themes of identity, femininity, and self-representation through the lens of the camera. The photographer is best known for her iconic series titled "Untitled Film Stills" (1977-1980), in which she stages herself in a series of photographs resembling stills from classic black-and-white films. This series explores gender stereotypes and how women are portrayed in the media. Over the decades, Cindy Sherman has continued to reinvent herself, transforming into different characters and using photography to challenge norms of beauty and identity. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide, and she is recognized as one of the most influential contemporary artists of her generation. In 2020, the Louis Vuitton Foundation dedicated a retrospective to her. The trunk created for Louis Vuitton is designed to the artist's dimensions and incorporates the codes of her work and her exploration of personality. Like travel souvenir stickers, the artist appears here and there on the trunk under different identities. Her disguised self-portraits are often disconcerting, evoking a range of characters from glamorous women to grotesque figures, cultural icons, and archetypes. Inside, the drawers are intended to accommodate accessories for the artist's transformations, such as "fake eyelashes," "clown wigs," "fake nails," "fake noses," etc. Similar to her photographic series, Cindy Sherman plays with the superficiality of appearances and examines how stereotypes, fashion, makeup, and clothing can influence our perception of ourselves and others. By using disguise as her primary artistic tool, Cindy Sherman invites us to look beyond appearances to discover the multiple facets of the individual while exploring the play of masks and mirrors that shape our understanding of ourselves and others. - En 2014, pour fêter les 160 ans de la toile monogram, la société Louis Vuitton demande à 10 artistes emblématiques de leurs époques de créer un objet Vuitton.
