"This pretty evening dress is from Saint Laurent's third independent collection for Dior after the untimely death of his mentor - Monsieur Dior in October 1957. Saint Laurent continued his new radical approach - aiming for youthful, more easy to wear clothes, something he had instigated in his Trapeze collection the previous year. The SS 1959 show notes declared that, "No longer confirmed within the limits of a purely geometrical figure or the obligatory curve of an arch, this season the silhouette is liberated a new woman is born; long, extremely long, supple, natural, easy, suggested by the long oblique of the back and the sinuous line of the bust in its right place, of the supple waist, the subdued hips A new chapter opens: No longer a new line but a new style - a style that sets out to be deliberately young, light hearted, typically 1959.'' Vogue remarked "At Dior, delicious and apparently uncontrived clothes. One looks twice to see the cunning and skill that have gone into their apparent effortlessness.'' For day the dresses featured pleats with broad belts, and for the evening columnar sheaths or as in this case, "short evening dresses, extremely light, in a new style: dancing skirts with madly wide skirts, like a ballerina's." This vibrant green gown just goes to prove the timelessness of great design and the genius of Saint Laurent."
