HERMÈS BY MARTIN MARGIELA "Initials" bag in dark brown Barénia calfskin, 2002 Black leather lining Handle system that allows the bag to be carried on the shoulder or by hand when crossed With detachable key ring and interior zippered pocket 32 cm - 12.5 in. Dust bag and box THE HERMÈS BAG 2002 “I dreamed of creating a handbag that would perfectly complement the style of the outfits I was designing at Hermès. Certain garments called for certain movements, and that served as the starting point for my research. The gestures were essential: opening and closing, carrying on the shoulder or holding in the hand—every movement was studied. The design is minimalist, with a minimum of details and only two seams. After numerous fittings, the final result was brilliantly executed by the workshops. For me, it is a rare piece of exceptional craftsmanship.” Martin Margiela A similar model is reproduced in: - Exhibition catalog “Margiela, The Hermès Years,” MoMu, Antwerp, March–August 2017, pp. 92–93 Provenance: From the wardrobe of Martin Margiela’s mother, Léa Bouchet. “Initials” bag in dark brown Barenia calfskin, 2002 Black leather lining Handle system allowing the bag to be carried either on the shoulder or by hand, depending on how the handles are crossed With a detachable keychain with bell, and an interior zippered pocket 32 cm - 12.5 in.
