HERMÈS BY MARTIN MARGIELA - Lot 163
HERMÈS BY MARTIN MARGIELA “Cape Cod” Watch, Fall-Winter 1998-1999 Steel case, branded, original design by Henri d'Origny "Double Tour" leather strap with natural patina Two additional straps in gold-patina leather and burnt black leather With presentation box, instruction sheet, and warranty documents "DOUBLE TOUR" “Thinking back on all those women wearing men’s steel Rolexes, I wanted to create an equally powerful tool for the new millennium. I didn’t intend to create a watch—Hermès already offered magnificent ones. It was more about how to wear it, which is where I wanted to make my mark. My favorite watch was the “Cape Cod” designed by Henri d’Origny. I fitted it with a Hermès leather strap—my favorite leather, “cuir à brides”—because it’s the only one that doesn’t require topstitching. But a strap of a different length—twice as long. This idea gave rise to a completely new way of wearing a watch and became a bestseller that endures to this day. Needless to say, all the major brands immediately copied it.” Martin Margiela Similar model reproduced in: - Exhibition catalog “Margiela, The Hermès Years,” MoMu, Antwerp, March–August 2017, pp. 38, 123, 125 Provenance: The wardrobe of Martin Margiela’s mother, Léa Bouchet A “Cape Cod” watch, Fall-Winter 1998-1999 Stainless steel case, labeled, original design by Henri d’Origny Double-wrap natural patinated leather strap with bridle details Includes two additional straps in gold-patinated leather and black burnt leather With presentation box, instructions, and warranty documents "DOUBLE TOUR" "Remembering all the women wearing their men’s Rolex watches in steel, I wanted to create an equal power tool for the millennium.
