Designer Provenance: From the wardrobe of Martin Margiela’s mother, Léa Bouchet. “LA VAREUSE” 1998 “A ‘vareuse’ is the French term for a sailor’s top, open-fronted and easy to slip on. I created a variation with a deep V-neckline. This design was adapted for numerous garments: jackets, sweaters, dresses, and shirts. The white poplin Vareuse shirt quickly became iconic and appeared in several collections.
