MARTIN MARGIELA - MAISON MARTIN MARGIELA 1988-2008 Martin Margiela’s personal white smock, 1988-2008 White cotton smock Signed “Martin” by himself Several significant paint stains from its use as workwear Size 52 Provenance: Martin Margiela’s personal archives. “WHITE COAT” 1988–2008 “In 1988, when Maison Martin Margiela was founded, the entire team wore these white cotton aprons. They are replicas of the “lab coats” that models wear in haute couture houses between fittings, just like the people working in the workshops. Since our fashion house was rather controversial, the outside world dubbed them ‘lab coats,’ which had absolutely nothing to do with my intention. What interested me was the contrast between the traditional and the progressive. This apron is one of mine.” Martin Margiela Martin Margiela’s personal white blouse, 1988–2008 White cotton work blouse Hand-signed "Martin" by the designer himself Several paint marks consistent with its use as a work garment Size 52 Provenance: Martin Margiela’s personal archives "WHITE BLOUSE" 1988 - 2008 "In 1988, when Maison Martin Margiela was founded, all the staff wore these white cotton aprons. They are copies of the "blouses" worn by models in high fashion houses between fittings, as well as by staff members in the ateliers. Because our fashion house was rather controversial, the outside world nicknamed them laboratory coats, which had absolutely nothing to do with my intention. What interested me was the contrast between the traditional and the progressive. This apron is one of mine." Martin Margiela
