MAISON MARTIN MARGIELA - 1987 - (PREPARATORY MATERIALS) First portfolio illustrating the future Maison Martin Margiela, 1987 Contains 13 pages (A3 format) with drawings, facsimiles, and collages by Martin Margiela, defining the House’s aesthetic Stamped In a cotton-covered folder 45 x 32 cm - 17.75 x 12 in. FIRST “FOLDER” 1987 “At the beginning, when I was looking for a manufacturer in Italy, I had to visualize the fashion I wanted to create. I drew a few silhouettes and accessories in the spirit of my imaginary fashion house. This portfolio perfectly reflected the identity of that house, then still unknown. The folder, covered in white cotton, was stolen on a train, and I had to make another one immediately for my travels. At the time, I felt that photocopies of drawings were more contemporary than original pencil sketches. Thanks to this, I was able to prepare an almost identical portfolio. A year later, the police recovered the stolen portfolio. I immediately compared the two and was surprised to see how similar they were.” Martin Margiela Provenance: Martin Margiela’s personal archives. Stamped In a cotton-covered folder 45 x 32 cm - 17.75 x 12 in. FIRST "DOSSIER" 1987 "In the beginning, when I was looking for a manufacturer in Italy, I had to visualize the fashion I wanted to create. I drew some silhouettes and accessories in the spirit of my imaginary fashion house. This dossier captured the essence of the then-unknown fashion house very well. The file, covered in white cotton, was stolen on a train, so I had to make another one immediately to show during my travels. At that time, I felt that photocopies of drawings were cooler than original pencil drawings. Thanks to this, I was able to prepare a nearly identical portfolio. A year later, the police found it. I immediately compared the two and was surprised at how similar they were." Martin Margiela Provenance: Martin Margiela’s personal archives.
