Made using the lost-wax technique, these rings feature finely chased zoomorphic decorations - birds, reptiles or composite animals - evoking proverbs and ancestral wisdom. True status insignia, they affirm the social rank of their wearer while materializing the symbolic power associated with gold in Akan societies. TheAdwetakyiqui bird is depicted here, reputed to be so powerful that a cannon would be needed to shoot it. The iconography of this powerful bird, with cannons attached to its wings and a barrel of gunpowder, refers to the proverb: "the bird that always travels with cannons and gunpowder", meaning that the ideal chief must always be ready for war. Appraised by Mr. Pierre Mollfulleda, Specialist in Oceanic and African Arts. A zoomorphic 14K (585) gold ring, Akan, Ghana.
