Important 14K (585) and 9K (375) gold necklace, Baoulé, Côte - Lot 66
Important 14K (585) and 9K (375) gold necklace, Baoulé, Côte d'Ivoire, Composed of 18 geometrically decorated beads Length: 32 cm, Gross weight: 163.10 grs. According to oral tradition, the Akan from Ghana introduced the art of goldsmithing to Côte d'Ivoire in the 18th century. However, 17th-century engravings of gold beads collected on the "Côte d'Or" during the voyages of the merchant Jean Barbot in 1679 and 1684 attest to the fact that this type of jewelry had long been known to the Akan (cf. Garrard, 1989: 62-63). These precious necklaces, worn by women and children, could also be hung in front of chiefs' houses during public ceremonies. The Baulé give names or proverbs to the different shapes of beads. Thus, the large disks called "senzes" signify "setting sun", the perlessrala "bamboo door" and certain tubular beadsayekpe "grains of wheat" or "I don't need to marry to live" (Garrard, 1989: 96-98).cf.Barbier (1993: 163-164) and Ross (2002: 233) for comparable necklaces preserved at the Barbier-Mueller Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston (Glassell collection). Houston (Glassell collection). Very fine quality of the lost-wax casting and well-balanced arrangement of the pearls. Appraised by Mr. Pierre Mollfulleda, Specialist in Oceanic and African Arts. A large 14K (585) and 9K (375) gold necklace, Baoulé, Ivory Coast,
