A beautiful 9K (375) gold mask-pendant, Baoulé, Ivory Coast - Lot 65
A beautiful 9K (375) gold mask-pendant, Baoulé, Ivory Coast Height: 6 cm, gross weight: 35.71 grs. Provenance: - Collection of Dr. Stephen Chauvet, Paris - Private American collection - Sotheby's, New York, December 2, 1983, no. 107 - Philippe Ratton, Paris Bibliography : - Basler, L'Art chez les Peuples Primitifs, 1929, pl. 22b - Cossio and Pijoan, Summa Artis Historia General del Arte, Bilbao, Madrid and Barcelona, vol. I, 1931, p. 240 - Portier and Poncetton, Les Arts Sauvages Afrique, 1956, pl. XXIII, no. 46 - Bastin, Introduction aux Arts de l'Afrique Noire, 1984, p. 165, no. 143 This mask is typical of Baule art. These gold pendants, "worn by kings and notables on special occasions, around the neck, on the arms, in the headdress [...] and other manufactured gold objects constituted the core of the dudya, a treasure jealously guarded by the chiefdoms and transmitted from generation to generation (FéauinRMN, 1997, p. 220). Very few of them were sold and found their way into European collections - notably those of Derain, Bédiat, Tzara, Chauvet (as shown here) and Ratton in the 1930s. Cast in lost-wax, their corpus consists for the most part of worked plates and heads, both human and animal. Appraised by Mr. Pierre Mollfulleda, Specialist in Oceanic and African Arts. A Baoulé pendant mask in 9K (375) gold, Côte d'Ivoire.
