Large threshing board called Tribulum, Iberian Peninsula, pr - Lot 13
Large threshing board called Tribulum, Iberian Peninsula, probably Portugal Dimensions: 163 x 83 cm. Provenance : - Pierre Robin, Paris - Hubert Goldet, Paris - François Ricqlès sale, Paris, June 30, 2001, Hubert Goldet Collection, no. 644 Composed of large, solidly-assembled vertical wooden elements, the active face is densely sown with lithic inlays that are still largely preserved. These flint flakes, inserted into regular perforations, formed a cutting surface designed to fragment the ears of grain during threshing. The composition is striking for the geometric rigor of its layout: the rhythmic field of mineral flakes dialogues with the warmth of the weathered wood, with its ancient cracks and traces of use. The strong presence of lithic elements, often missing from preserved pieces, lends this piece a singular graphic and sculptural force. Pulled by an animal over the threshing floor, the tribulum belongs to a Mediterranean agricultural tradition that has been attested to since Antiquity and remained in use on the Iberian Peninsula until the early 20th century. At the frontier between tool and sculpture, this object bears witness to an ancestral rural economy, while its modular structure and formal abstraction give it an astonishingly modern plastic presence. Appraised by Mr. Pierre Mollfulleda, Specialist in Oceanic and African Arts. A large threshing board called a Tribulum, Portugal.
