Metal opelé chain, Babalawo diviner attribute, Yoruba, Niger - Lot 9
Metal opelé chain, Babalawo diviner attribute, Yoruba, Nigeria, Length: 107.5 cm. Provenance: Acquired from Galerie Afrique Alain Dufour on September 15, 2019. This divination instrument consists of a chain bearing eight elements - originally half pods from the opelé tree - here replaced by small copper-alloy masks, accompanied by beads, cowries and a bell. During an Ifa consultation, the diviner throws the chain to the ground: the arrangement of the elements, open or closed face, indicates the corresponding divinatory sign and guides the interpretation of Ifa's sacred corpus. Expertised by Mr. Pierre Mollfulleda, Specialist in Oceanic and African Arts. An opelé metal chain, attribute of a Babalawo diviner, Nigeria.
