Bibliography: Work reproduced in black and white in Roberto Pontual, Scliar o real em reflexo e transfiguraçao, Civilizaçao Brasileira, Rio de Janeiro, 1970, p. 36 Exhibition: Exhibited at the Rio de Janeiro Museum of Modern Art in 1968. Carlos Scliar (1920 - 2001) was a painter, engraver, draughtsman and illustrator, and a central figure in Brazilian modern art. The son of Jewish immigrants, he took up drawing at an early age and, while still a teenager, became close to Cândido Portinari, who was to exert a decisive influence on his artistic training. His experience with the Brazilian Expeditionary Force during the Second World War had a profound influence on his production, giving him a keen eye for everyday life and human tensions. Over the course of more than six decades, he explored painting, engraving, graphic design and illustration, taking an active part in engraving clubs in the south of the country and contributing to the dialogue between art, politics and culture in Brazil. His work, characterized by a strong formal synthesis and a commitment to social reality, constitutes a fundamental legacy for the consolidation of Brazilian modernism. Roberto Pontual had a close relationship with Scliar, several of whose works feature in the collection. Two canvases from the 1960s stand out for their use of a variety of materials and collage techniques, with the artist frequently mixing different processes within a single composition. His work is held in numerous private and public collections in Brazil, as well as in the MoMA collection in New York.
