Glauco RODRIGUES (1929-2004) - Lot 124
Glauco RODRIGUES (1929-2004) Visão da Terra: A Lenda do Coati-Puru que porventura é?, 1977 Acrylic on canvas mounted on wood panel Signed and dated middle right Signed, dated and titled on back Galerie de Ipanema label on back 79 x 98 - framed: 86 x 105 cm Exhibitions: Work presented : - At the 16th Istanbul Biennial at the Pera Museum in 2019 - In the exhibition Glauco Rodrigues: un Brésil hyper-réel at the Palais des Beaux-arts, Paris, from April 25 to July 7, 2013. Provenance: Former collection of art critic and historian Roberto Pontual (1939-1994) Glauco Rodrigues (1929-2004) occupies a singular place in Brazilian art of the second half of the 20th century, developing a body of work marked by a critical and ironic look at the country's national identity, history and visual culture. Initially self-taught, he was also active as an engraver, illustrator and designer, and went through phases of experimentation ranging from abstraction to inventive figuration nourished by popular imagery, the media and historical narratives. His visual language, often described as "critical tropicalism", blends humor, satire and vivid colors to question the social, political and cultural tensions of contemporary Brazil, through abundant compositions constructed as collages of images and symbols. Roberto Pontual's collection includes a major work from the Visão da Terra series - A Lenda do Coati-Puru, created in 1977, at the height of Brazil's military dictatorship. This work, which was exhibited in 2019 at the Istanbul Biennale, illustrates with humor and social criticism the illusion of progress of the time, through bright tropical colors and a vibrant visual style, typical of Glauco Rodrigues. The collection also includes several works bearing personal dedications to Roberto Pontual, revealing his very intimate bond with the artists: a watercolor (Bijou dormindo, 1987), a gouache (Meu Jardim à Noite, 1987) and a painting depicting São Sebastião (1994). These pieces testify not only to the quality and diversity of his collection, but also to the closeness and friendship that united Roberto Pontual to Glauco and his contemporaries. Recent exhibitions include Redécouvrir Glauco Rodrigues at the Palais des Beux-Arts in Paris (2013); Brasilidade Pós-Modernismo, at the CCBB (2021-2022); and AI-5 50 Years - Still Hasn't Ended Yet, at the Instituto Tomie Ohtake in São Paulo (2018). His work is part of several public and private collections, including the Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo, the Museu de Arte do Rio Grande do Sul - MARGS, the Museu Victor Meirelles, in Brazil; the University of Essex in the UK; and the Museo de Bellas Artes de Coruña in Spain."
