Wanda PIMENTEL (1943-2019) - Lot 114
Wanda PIMENTEL (1943-2019) Untitled, 1982 Acrylic on canvas Signed and dated on back 50 x 70 cm Provenance: Former collection of art critic and historian Roberto Pontual (1939-1994) Wanda Pimentel (1943 - 2019) is a major Brazilian artist whose work, situated between figuration and abstraction, is distinguished by precise geometric lines, smooth surfaces and an intense chromatic palette inherited from Constructivism. Trained by Ivan Serpa at Rio de Janeiro's Museu de Arte Moderna, from the late 1960s onwards she developed a body of work attentive to domestic spaces, everyday objects and the dynamics of consumer society, subtly questioning gender roles and the social tensions of her time. The painting, in the collection of Roberto Pontual, is part of his famous Envolvimento (Wrapping) series, which perfectly illustrates this exploration of domestic intimacy and the status of women in Brazilian society. Inscribed in the debates of the nouvelle figuration and international avant-gardes, her practice combines formal rigor and critical charge, exploring new motifs over the decades - from urban landscapes to animal figures - and thus asserting an essential contribution to the history of feminist and contemporary art in Latin America. Wanda Pimentel is represented in many major public collections, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the Museu de Arte Contemporânea in Niterói, the MALBA in Buenos Aires, the MASP - Museu de Arte in São Paulo and the MAM, Rio de Janeiro.
