Paulo Roberto LEAL (1946-1991) - Lot 76
Paulo Roberto LEAL (1946-1991) Oblongo, 1987 Black - gray Acrylic on canvas Signed, titled and dated on back 129 x 160 cm Provenance: Former collection of art critic and historian Roberto Pontual (1939-1994) Exhibition: Work exhibited in the "Ouverture Brésilienne" exhibition at CREDAC, Ivry-sur-Seine, December 16, 1987-January 31, 1988. We would like to thank Projeto Concreto PRL / Acervo Iconográfico Documental/MAM.RJ for the information provided. "The work he has been developing since 1969 is rooted in one of the vectors of Brazilian art: construction. More specifically, the neo-concrete, a movement that Brazilian art experienced between 1959 and 1961. From then on, paper, cut-outs, canvas, stitching, material and color are my characters. With them, I create an infinite modulation in which form is the result of its perpetual recomposition. Until recently, the surface of the canvas was the space where something had to happen, while its limits served to establish proportions so that construction could be experienced. Today, as an extension of this ongoing work, some of my structures inhabit the limited space of the canvas as if it were total space. The space of the canvas doesn't just speak for itself. Verticality and horizontality are no longer determined by the work, but by the viewer." Paulo Roberto Leal, 1987, about his work presented at Crédac. Image Right Reserved
