Alair GOMES (1921-1992) - Lot 57
Alair GOMES (1921-1992) From Beach triptych n° B, circa 1980 Black and white photograph Stamp on back Sheet size: 35.5 x 24 cm Provenance: Former collection of critic and art historian Roberto Pontual (1939-1994) Brazilian philosopher, art critic and photographer Alair Gomes (1921-1992) devoted himself, from the 1960s onwards, to a singular body of photographic work centered on the male body as an aesthetic, philosophical and intimate object. Trained in engineering and the physical sciences, he developed a rigorous practice marked by observation, sequence and a veritable "visual music", notably in emblematic series such as Sonatinas, shot from his apartment in Ipanema or on the beaches of Carioca. In a repressive political and cultural context, his work boldly explores the beauty, sensuality and presence of the male body, combining references to classical art, formal systematization and diaristic dimensions. His work - of which the Roberto Pontual Collection holds a dozen complete series as well as unique pieces - has long remained confidential, but has gradually gained international recognition, including in the collections of MoMA New York, MAM Rio de Janeiro, the Brazilian National Library and the Fondation Cartier in Paris. Today, it represents a major contribution to the history of contemporary photography. Alair Gomes has been the subject of two monographic exhibitions in France: at the Fondation Cartier in 2001 and at the MEP in 2009.
