Anna Bella GEIGER (b. 1933) - Lot 54
Anna Bella GEIGER (b. 1933) Local da Açāo 2, 1979 Etching and aquatint on paper Signed and dated lower right, numbered 7/60 lower left Sheet: 70 x 50 - Image 39 x 39 cm Provenance: Former collection of art critic and historian Roberto Pontual (1939-1994) Anna Bella Geiger (b. 1933) is a key figure in contemporary Brazilian art, whose experimental practice cuts across painting, printmaking, photography, video and conceptual devices. Since the 1950s, she has been questioning systems of representation of the body and territory, placing personal memory, symbolic cartographies and political narratives in tension. From the 1970s onwards, she embarked on a phase of radical experimentation, combining appropriated images, montage, photogravure and graphic processes. The engraving in the Roberto Pontual collection - Local de Ação 2 (1979) - emblematic of this research, articulates politics, territory and identity in a fragmented visual construction, revealing her critical, hybrid approach. Today, his work remains a major reference for visual and conceptual thought in Latin America. Geiger has taken part in international biennales in São Paulo (1961, 1963, 1965, 1967, 1981, 1985, 1989, 1998), Venice (1980), Havana (1997), Porto Alegre, Brazil (1997) and Istanbul (2019). His work is held in major collections, including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Fondation Cartier in Paris, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid, the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles.
