Antonio BANDEIRA (1922-1967) - Lot 9
Antonio BANDEIRA (1922-1967) Paris, 1955 Oil on canvas Signed and dated lower right Countersigned, located/titled and dated on the back 18 x 14 cm Provenance: Former collection of art critic and historian Roberto Pontual (1939-1994) Antonio Bandeira (1922-1967) was a major Brazilian painter associated with the post-war avant-garde and recognized as one of the pioneers of lyrical abstraction in Brazil. Initially self-taught, he moved to Paris in 1946, where contact with international artistic debates profoundly transformed his pictorial language. An independent artist intensely involved in the aesthetic discussions of his time, he developed a style marked by the poetry of color, gesture and a strong personal dimension. Dividing his life between Brazil and France, he achieved early recognition on the international scene while cultivating a bohemian and singular personality. Today, his work is part of major private collections and features in several major public institutions, including the Centre Pompidou in France, MASP - Museu de Arte de São Paulo, MAM São Paulo and MAM Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. The Roberto Pontual collection includes a small-format oil on canvas and a drawing on paper, produced during his European period. These are the jewels of the collection, finely condensing the chromatic intensity and gestural freedom characteristic of his work.
