MAISON MARTIN MARGIELA ARTISANAL - Lot 114
MAISON MARTIN MARGIELA ARTISANAL A long vest made from a 1950s ball gown, spring-summer 1994 collection, reproduction of the spring-summer 1991 collection. A long waistcoat formed from a 1950s ballgown, Spring-Summer 1994 reproduction of Spring-Summer 1991 collection date label, formed from a vintage 1950s ballgown that was cut open at the front and had straps added, with frilly layers of grey lace and tulle to outer layer, nude viscose inner layer and pleated bodice, original zip closure to back, bust approx 86cm 34in These vintage dresses were originally designed to be worn with corsets in the 1950s and were too small to comfortably fit the models in the 1990s. Margiela had set up his first atelier at 13 Boulevard Saint-Denis which allowed the artisans space to make significant alterations to these pieces for the collection. They were dyed black in a washing machine, deconstructed and repurposed, imbuing them with a bold aesthetic that belied the feminine elegance that the dresses had originally intended.
