Bronze figure of Joan of Arc - Lot 42
Bronze figure of Joan of Arc Based on an 1874 model by Louis Fournier, late 19th / early 20th century Signed L. Fournier and BUSSY; inside the flag with the inscription JHESUS. MARIA 64 cm total A large bronze statue of Joan of Arc was commissioned from Louis Fournier in 1894 and produced by the Capitain foundry. Since June 17, 1896, it has graced the Place Saint-Firmin, Beaugency, France. The story of the Ferry-Capitain foundry, which certainly produced our bronze, is first and foremost a family epic which began in 1831, when Auguste Capitain joined forces with his brother-in-law to set up a workshop in Bussy (Haute-Marne) to wash and crush iron ore, which was then sold to neighboring forges. The company flourished throughout the 19th century. As testimony to its success, it was awarded the Grand Prix at the 1878 Exposition Universelle, a gold medal and two silver medals at the 1889 Exposition Universelle. With around 600 models, the Ferry-Capitain collection offers a unique insight into nineteenth- and early twentieth-century sculpture and its distribution. Plate 17 here in black and white, taken from the Ferry-Capitain catalog, 1928, shows the different sizes the foundry offered for the Joan of Arc sculpture.
