Jean DESPRES (1889-1980) - Lot 173
Jean DESPRES (1889-1980) Hammered pewter vase, circa 1929 Egg-shaped, on a circular heel, the neck decorated with rings Signed at the tip J.Despres Height: 33 cm, width: 19 cm. Provenance: Acquired from Galerie Jean-David Botella, Paris in 2010. Jean Després was a central figure of French Art Deco, although he is often considered a non-conformist artist within the movement. Initially trained as a jeweler, his style was distinguished by a radical brutality and modernity that contrasted with the more delicate ornamentation of his contemporaries. His experience as an aviation mechanic during the First World War inspired a passion for mechanical, streamlined and industrial forms, which he translates into the integration of bolt, rivet and gear-inspired motifs into his designs. A hammered pewter vase by Jean Despres
