JOSETTE HÉBERT-COËFFIN (1906-1976)
French sculptor, engraver and medalist
Born in Rouen on December 16, 1906, Josette Hébert-Coëffin established herself as one of the most accomplished French sculptors and medalists of her generation. A pupil of the great masters Robert Wlérick, Charles Despiau and Maurice Gensoli, she trained at the École des Beaux-Arts de Rouen, where she won first prize in sculpture and architecture in 1922.
A recognized precocious artist, she became the first French laureate of the prestigious John Simon Guggenheim Foundation in New York. In the 1930s, she collaborated with the Manufacture nationale de Sèvres, for which she designed several models. Her talent was recognized by two gold medals, one awarded at the 1937 International Exhibition, the other by the Société d'encouragement pour l'industrie.
Josette Hébert-Coëffin's work is characterized by great formal sensitivity, expressive modeling and rigorous execution. Her repertoire includes busts, bas-reliefs, religious statuettes and a remarkable collection of medals.
