Lebovici, ed. YP Art Expo, Paris, 2003, pages 77-78 French designer Yonel Lebovici belongs to the generation that, from the 1960s onwards, radically rethought the place of the object. Trained in aeronautics and then in the applied arts, he quickly developed a personal language, nourished by his taste for industrial materials, the play of light and formal experimentation. After a spell with sculptor Serge Mansau, he opened his own studio in Paris and turned to exploring Plexiglas, a material to which he gave an unprecedented sculptural dimension. Over the years, Lebovici has affirmed an aesthetic that is both conceptual and playful, in which everyday objects are often hijacked to become functional sculptures. Alongside his personal research, he created numerous interior fittings and designed furniture for prestigious houses such as Lanvin, Lancel and Hermès. Yonel Lebovici passed away prematurely in 1998, leaving behind a resolutely visionary body of work. An illuminated bookcase in black epoxy metal and frosted glass by Yonel Lebovici
