Mobilized during the First World War, he spent six years in the army. After the war, he set up his studio in Paris, where he developed his work and benefited from the support of collector Maurice Girardin. In 1925, he established his studio in Villa Seurat. In the 1930s, he gained considerable recognition, notably with a retrospective exhibition at the Kunsthalle Basel in 1933 and government commissions in 1937 for the Paris International Exhibition. During the Second World War, he lived in Aubusson and contributed to the revival of tapestry with Jean Lurçat. He was soon recognized by galleries and museums: Pierre Matisse exhibited his work at the inauguration of his New York gallery in 1931. From 1947 to 1956, he exhibited at the Galerie Louis Carré in Paris. In 1963, he was given a retrospective at the Musée National d'Art Moderne, and in 1980, at the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. An independent artist, he created a personal style blending lyricism and geometric structures. He left a body of work of around seven hundred canvases, a large part of which is now conserved at the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris.
