Jean DESPRES (1889-1980) Hammered silver-plated pewter tea and coffee set Of curved form, on pedestals decorated with a gourmet motif with flat links, the grips in rosewood comprising: - Coffee pot, height: 24 cm, - A teapot, height: 20 cm, - Sugar bowl, height: 9.5 cm, diameter: 13 cm, - Milk jug, height: 13.5 cm, - A tray, dimensions: 34 x 48.5 cm. All pieces signed J.Despres. (5) Provenance Acquired from Tajan, December 8, 2010, lot 89 Jean Després was a central figure of French Art Deco, although he is often considered a non-conformist artist within the movement. Initially trained as a jeweler, his style was characterized by a radical brutality and modernity that contrasted with the more delicate ornamentation of his contemporaries. His experience as an aviation mechanic during the First World War inspired a passion for mechanical, streamlined and industrial forms, which he translates into the integration of bolt, rivet and gear-inspired motifs into his designs.
