Anton PRINNER (1902-1983) - Lot 3
Anton PRINNER (1902-1983) Sphinx Woman, 1938 Bronze sculpture with brown patina Signed on the base Prinner dated 1938 and numbered 4/8 Foundry Susse Paris Dimensions: 72 x 33 x 23 cm. Madame Monique Brillant-Tanazacq will issue a certificate of authenticity at the buyer's request and expense. Provenance : Acquired from Galerie Yves Gastou, Paris in 2005. Born Anna Prinner in Budapest in 1902, Anton Prinner moved to Paris in 1928, where he quickly joined avant-garde circles. An independent and profoundly singular creator, he soon adopted a masculine identity and built a body of work in which material experimentation blended with a constant spiritual quest. Trained in monumental sculpture, from the 1930s Prinner developed a plastic language imbued with archaisms, inspired by Egyptian art, founding myths and the power of primordial forms. In the 1940s, he invented an innovative direct woodcut engraving technique. Close to major figures such as Brâncuși, Étienne Hajdu and Vieira da Silva, Prinner nevertheless remains an unclassifiable artist. His totemic silhouettes, hieratic faces and refined compositions are all manifestations of an inner quest, driven by a profound desire for aesthetic freedom and human demands. Settling in the south of France after the Second World War, he continued to produce a rich and varied body of work, including stone and wood sculptures, reliefs, assemblages and paintings. His work, of great formal sobriety, is distinguished by its spiritual strength and discreet avant-gardism. Image All rights reserved. A 'Sphinx Woman' bronze sculpture by Anton Prinner
