LÉON BAKST Polish costume for Boris Godunov, 1913 A Polish costume for Boris Godunov, 1913 stamped 'The Property of R Joseph Beecham', label inscribed 'Boris No6 Pole Scene Ladies', additionally stamped 'Societe du Theatre des Champs Elysees No 1133', the red velvet costume of 16th century-inspired design, the bodice with paned sleeves, trimmed with metal passementerie ribbons and braid, scalloped hem, bust 102cm 40in; the matching skirt with similar metal trim, the integral petticoat with velvet front and red linen back, waist 76cm 30in (2) In 1907 Diaghilev organised a series of five concerts of Russian music at Théâtre National de l'Opéra in Paris, which included parts of the opera Boris Godunov. Despite the lack of any stage production, the concerts were a success, inspiring Diagheleve to produce a full production of the opera the following year with costumes designed by Ivan Bilibin.The Opera was extremely well received and travelled to New York and London. Image Rights Reserved In 1913 Diaghalev made a new production of the opera at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées with costumes based on the originals by Bilibin, and new ones produced by Léon Bakst for the Polish characters. The costumes then traveled to England for a staging with theThomas Beecham Opera Company before being purchased by Jacques Rouché and returned to Paris for performances at the Paris Opera in 1922-23. Thereafter the costumes were re-used at the Opera house until the 1960s. The stamps in the present lot are a fascinating guide to the history of the piece, detailing their journey through the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées and the Thomas Beecham Theatre Company, and likewise match the similar stamps and inscriptions found in other known Bakst costumes from this opera.
