MAISON MARTIN MARGIELA ARTISANAL Tailcoat jacket from a thea - Lot 184
MAISON MARTIN MARGIELA ARTISANAL Tailcoat jacket from a theater costume, Spring-Summer 1993 A tailcoat from a vintage theater costume, Spring-Summer 1993 unlabelled, but stamped and inscribed with the collection to the lining, the 18th century style men's velvet tailcoat over-dyed black, embossed with vertical stripes, with domed gilt buttons, ruffled cotton 'engageants' to cuffs, scalloped pockets, bust 91cm 36in For this collection, Margiela showed at two locations simultaneously. The fashion press were in disarray with people arguing about which location was correct, but the invitation stipulated that the guests would only be let into the venue they had written on their invitation. When guests arrived, one show commenced with garments all in white tones, the other showed them all in black. For the artisanal pieces in this collection, Margiela had purchased the entire lot of costumes that were being sold following the closure of a theatre. The artisanal studio overdyed these garments to match the theme of each show, and some were deconstructed and repurposed in various ways.
