MAISON MARTIN MARGIELA ARTISANAL Pullover in military socks, - Lot 177
MAISON MARTIN MARGIELA ARTISANAL Pullover in military socks, Autumn-Winter 1991-92 A military sock sweater, Autumn-Winter 1991-92 blank label, formed of eight pairs of military socks sourced from an army surplus store, the heels forming the elbows and raised shoulders, bust approx 81m 32in This garment is particularly important in Margiela's oeuvre. It is informed not only by his interest in military menswear, but also by deconstruction and repurposing of garments. "For my collection, I wanted and needed tight fitting sweaters. Without a manufacturer, I had to improvise" Marigela explained in an interview with Marie Claire, November 1991. The artisanal studio dyed the socks black, however as only the wool retained the dye, the resulting garments had different shades of green and black throughout. This resourcefulness demonstrates Margiela's unique ability to recontextualise the old in a way that seems radically new - an ethos that came to define this important period in Margiela's career. As Margiela explained in Depeche Mode, November 1992, "When I deconstruct a new or old garment, I don't believe I am destroying it. It's a way of giving it a new life in another form".
