MAISON MARTIN MARGIELA ARTISANAL Long vest formed from a 195 - Lot 174
MAISON MARTIN MARGIELA ARTISANAL Long vest formed from a 1950s ballgown, Spring-Summer 1991 A long waistcoat formed from a 1950s ballgown, Spring-Summer 1991 blank label, formed from a vintage 1950s ballgown that was cut open at the front and had straps added, with black tulle point d'esprit outer layer, crêpe inner layer, frills to neckline and hem, cotton ties to front, original zip and hook and loop closures to back, bust approx 91cm 36in These vintage dresses were originally designed to be worn with corsets in the 1950s and were too small to comfortably fit the models in the 1990s. Margiela had set up his first atelier at 13 Boulevard Saint-Denis which allowed the artisans space to make significant alterations to these pieces for the collection. They were dyed black in a washing machine, deconstructed and repurposed, imbuing them with a bold aesthetic that belied the feminine elegance that the dresses had originally intended.
