MAISON MARTIN MARGIELA - Lot 66
MAISON MARTIN MARGIELA A rare set including a curtain skirt, Fall-Winter 1990-91 A rare curtain skirt ensemble, Autumn-Winter 1990-91 Blank labels, comprising: a black viscose 'lining' skirt, the waist with metal rings threaded with black cotton ribbon, adjustable size; an ink blue felted wool coat with cigarette inserts to shoulders, gussets to back of armscyes, zip closure to front extending up right lapel, patch pockets, darts to bust and sleeves, bust 86cm 34in These models were worn together on the runway. These early collections represented a visual manifesto for what Margiela's oeuvre would become. He focussed on exposing the methods of production so that the history of a garments own craftsmanship could be seen on the wearer and he achieved this by regularly employing techniques whereby seam returns and darts were shown on the exterior of the garments. In this case the skirt evokes the fitting room curtains behind which his models would bring his experimental clothes to life
