MAISON MARTIN MARGIELA - Lot 22
MAISON MARTIN MARGIELA A rare and important set including a white cotton mesh vest, Spring-Summer 1990. A rare and important white cotton mesh vest ensemble, Spring-Summer 1990 Comprising: a white cotton mesh vest top enlarged by 200%, blank label, bust 203cm 80in; a sheer nylon mesh long sleeved t-shirt with exposed seams, gathered shoulders, bust 91cm 36in, unlabelled (2) UK This runway show demonstrated Margiela's interest in scale for the first time - a theme he would prominently revisit in the 2000s. He was initially inspired when he had a model try on a large 1960s bathing suit that swamped her petit form. For this show he enlarged simple mens vests by 200% and had models wear them squeezed beneath sheer nylon t-shirts, resulting in intricate, sinuous folds that are redolent of the fine pleating and ruching of haute couture. FR This show first demonstrated Margiela's interest in scale - a theme he would revisit in a major way in the 2000s. He was initially inspired when he had a model try on a large 1960s swimsuit that drowned her delicate figure.
