MAISON MARTIN MARGIELA - Lot 15
MAISON MARTIN MARGIELA A five-element "saddlebag" set, Spring-Summer 1990. A rare and important pannier bag ensemble, Spring-Summer 1990 Comprising: a pair of white cotton shoulders with cigarette inserts, buttoned yoke section to front, blank label; a pair of trousers with white upper and brown checked wool lower sections, drawstring waist, raw hems, darts to knees, unlabelled, max waist 91cm 36in; a pair of pale beige wool pannier saddlebags joined with white cotton ribbon ties, blank label; a white cotton jabot worn as a bra, with white cotton ribbon ties, unlabelled (5) UK Much of this collection focussed on a silhouette that was narrow at the top and wide at the bottom, recalling the silhouettes of late 18th century dresses. However it also demonstrated Margiela's fascination with the transition from one piece of clothing to another. Here dresses and jumpsuits were folded over to make skirts that ballooned out at the waist, bags became panniers and a jabot (an exact replica of an 18th century example he had found in a book) was worn as a bra.
