Private European collection An 18K gold, diamond and natural pearl necklace, by Edouard Caen Edouard Caen, a house as discreet as it is remarkable By Marie Chabrol There are houses whose discretion makes them invisible to the general public. The Caen house falls into this category. The family jewel case presented at Maurice Auction reveals the talent of a company whose origins date back to 1859, when Edouard Caen, a chain jeweller born in 1832 in the Vosges, set up his own business in Paris. In the second quarter of the 19th century, the Atelier Dupont produced some of the finest chains and bracelets in Paris. The young Caen, arriving from his Alsace-Lorraine home, became an apprentice and, after a few years, set up a workshop with his brother Siméon and Ernest Beaumont, former head of the Maison Dupont workshop. It was June 1859, and the story began at 19 rue de Richelieu before moving to 19 rue Rambuteau. Business flourished, and in 1868, Edouard Caen became owner of the Veuve Riou workshop, one of the biggest companies of the Second Empire. Imagine a million chains leaving the workshop every year... It makes you wonder! The company changed names several times over the course of its history, becoming Edouard Caen &Cie in 1889. Then, in 1903, with Paul and Emile Caen, it became Les fils d'Edouard Caen. It was at the turn of the 20th century that the company's production evolved considerably towards a more refined jewelry style incorporating diamonds and coloured stones. The very few examples available available and the jewels on display here. The company's designs testify to the high level of craftsmanship of the workshop, whose most exceptional production occurred in the first half of the 20th century. Sculpted jade and diamonds were used to set off fine pearls and sapphires, platinum was light and airy, adorned with a thousand and one diamonds, and the tiaras and diadems produced by the atelier displayed a treasure trove of technical skills, featuring scrolls, foliage and Art Deco motifs... The atelier and its jewelers kept pace with fashion, offering top-flight jewelry that seduced elegant Parisian and international women alike. Perhaps you own some pieces from this workshop, which are waiting to be rediscovered because of its great talent... If so, you're in luck! Edouard Caen, a discreet but wonderful jewelry maison By Marie Chabrol Some companies are more discreet than others... The Caen jewelry house is one of them.
