Jonathan MONK (b. 1969) - Lot 91
Jonathan MONK (b. 1969) Lines, 1998 Color pencil on paper Signed, titled and dated on back Galerie Yvon Lambert label on back of frame 29.5 x 21.2 cm A colored pencils on paper by Jonathan Monk FR Jonathan Monk was born in 1969, a crucial year in the development of conceptual art. Jonathan Monk's art has two main sources: his family history and an art history he is passionate about, that of minimal and conceptual art, certain forms of which he reactivates. But beyond simple quotation, it is above all the conceptual spirit that he invokes in his works. In a gesture that borrows more from parody than simple copying, Jonathan Monk questions our relationship to the originality of the work and to the aura of the artist born of modernity. As a result, his protean practice does not accept a specifically personal style. In "Lines", he parodies a work by John Baldessari: I Will Not Make Any More Boring Art (1971). "Appropriation is something I've used or worked with in my art since I started art school in 1987. I always think that art is about ideas, and surely the idea of an original and a copy of an original are two very different things". His protean practice thus does not adhere to any specific personal style. In "Lines," he parodies a work by John Baldessari: I Will Not Make Any More Boring Art from 1971.
