MAISON MARTIN MARGIELA PAR JOHN GALLIANO Coat from the Maison Margiela Artisanale or haute couture collection by John Galliano, start of collection, spring-summer 2015 Maison Margiela by John Galliano Artisanal or haute couture debut collection coat, Spring-Summer, 2015 0 marked label, the A-line coat of hand-sewn buckram overlaid with black cotton lace and painted across the chest and upper arms with black acrylic resin, with late Victorian beadwork to the collar, clear plastic patch pockets with 18th century inspired pocket flaps, press-stud fastened double-breasted closure adorned with large black lacquered conch shells, lined in nude organza; with separate layered tulle bustle panel in shades of brown and black attached via pink ribbon shoulder straps and adorned with chandelier-like glass droplets, peach organza and brown tulle rosebuds with green satin rouleau stems, chest approx. 92cm, 36in (2) John Galliano accepted the role of creative director at Maison Margiela in 2014, five years after the retirement of founding designer Martin Margiela and three years after his departure from Dior. This ensemble was inspired by a threadbare doll losing its stuffing and reflects Galliano's and Margiela's shared interests in the aesthetics and techniques of deconstruction and "objets trouvés". Galliano's use of antique beadwork, cotton lace woven to imitate 17th century gros point de Venise, the pocket shapes - redolent of those found on 1750s frock coats and the addition of the 21st century tulle bustle reflects the designer's enduring interest in historicism, first seen in his 'Incroyables' degree show of 1984 and throughout his tenure as creative director at John Galliano, Givenchy and Christian Dior. An identical coat is part of the Metropolitan Museum Costume Institute's collection, accession no 2015.540a-g. Provenance: The Mouna Ayoub Collection
